Greater flamingos can turn a quiet pool into a busy scene with surprisingly little effort. A flock may stand in shallow water, feed with their heads upside down, or preen their feathers while balancing on one long leg. Watch closely during feeding and you'll see the unusual bill moving from side to side through the water. Its shape allows the flamingo to filter tiny food particles from the mud and water. Their tall bodies and long necks make them easy to spot, but a wing stretch reveals another detail: vivid black flight feathers hidden beneath the pink and coral plumage. At a zoo or wildlife destination, listen for the soft calls and watch how quickly the flock responds when one bird starts moving. Greater flamingos are found across parts of southern Europe, Africa, and Asia, often around shallow lakes, lagoons, and wetlands. Their pink coloring comes from pigments in their diet, so feeding is closely tied to the appearance that makes these birds so recognizable.
