Geoffroy's tufted-ear marmosets are small, quick-moving monkeys, so a few minutes at their exhibit can feel like watching a miniature treetop neighborhood. Their white faces and dark ear tufts make them easy to pick out, but the real fun is following what those little hands and claws are doing. They climb headfirst down trunks, inspect branches, groom one another, and search for food with constant attention. One of their most unusual habits is feeding on tree gum. Using their specialized incisors, they gouge small holes into bark and return to collect the sticky reward. Fruit and insects are also on the menu, and wild marmosets have even been seen following army ant swarms to catch insects flushed into the open. These monkeys usually live in family groups, with several members helping care for young. Look for the social moments between bursts of climbing and foraging. A quiet grooming session can suddenly give way to a scramble across the branches.
