Eastern tiger salamanders spend much of their lives out of sight, but a close look can reveal a surprisingly distinctive animal. Their stout bodies, dark coloring, and irregular yellowish markings give them a bold, almost painted appearance. Around a well-designed exhibit, they may sit quietly beneath logs or vegetation before suddenly moving across the ground with deliberate, powerful steps. These salamanders are especially interesting to watch after learning that adults can spend long periods underground, while breeding brings them back to ponds and other temporary wetlands. Young salamanders begin life in water with feathery external gills, a detail that can make an exhibit feel like a window into two very different stages of the same animal. Patient observers may notice how easily the salamander disappears into its surroundings, a useful reminder that some of the wildest wildlife encounters are with animals that prefer to keep a low profile.
