Crevalle jacks are powerful, fast-moving fish that can turn an aquarium exhibit into a constant sweep of silver and blue. Their deep, muscular bodies and forked tails are built for speed, and they often cruise through open water before making sudden changes in direction. Watch a group closely and you'll see how quickly the fish respond to one another, shifting together when something catches their attention. Crevalle jacks are active predators that chase smaller fish, shrimp, and other prey, using bursts of speed rather than quietly waiting on the bottom. Their dark backs and silvery sides can look quite different depending on the light, especially when a school turns at once. Adults can become surprisingly large, while younger fish may gather in schools that provide safety as they grow. At an aquarium, try following one fish as it crosses the exhibit. It may disappear behind rocks and reappear moments later at the other end, giving you a good sense of how much ground this open-water hunter can cover in a short time.
