Native Range: Northern Mexico and the southwestern United States

The banded rock rattlesnake can be easy to overlook among rocks and dry vegetation, which is part of what makes a close look worthwhile. Its muted bands and earthy colors help it blend into the rugged landscapes where it lives. Rather than constantly moving, it may remain coiled in one spot, with only small shifts of the head revealing that it is alert to what is happening nearby. The patterned scales become more noticeable when the snake moves into the open, and its narrow body is well suited to navigating rocky spaces. Look at the tail for the characteristic rattle, a feature used as a warning when the snake feels threatened. Native to rocky mountain habitats of northern Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States, this rattlesnake is adapted to dry, uneven terrain. A zoo exhibit provides a safe opportunity to notice the details that camouflage can hide in the wild, especially the subtle bands and careful movements that appear once you slow down and watch.
