Von der Decken's hornbill is a small, quick-moving bird that rewards visitors who watch the ground as well as the branches. Its bold bill is the feature that usually catches the eye, with the male's bright red-and-yellow coloring contrasting against a dark body. These hornbills often forage on the ground, hopping between patches of vegetation as they search for insects, seeds, and fallen fruit. A few steps can suddenly turn into a short flight to a nearby perch, so their movements are rarely predictable. Listen for their calls too, particularly when more than one bird is nearby. Native to dry, open habitats of eastern Africa, they are well suited to warm landscapes where vegetation can be scattered. Their ability to find food across the ground makes them especially interesting to watch in an open exhibit. Give one a few minutes and the details start to stand out: the colorful bill, quick head movements, purposeful walking, and sudden bursts of flight.
