Western grey kangaroos have a relaxed way of moving that can make them seem almost casual until they start hopping. Their powerful hind legs and long tails work together to produce smooth, spring-loaded bounds, while the tail helps keep the body balanced during each leap. At a zoo or wildlife destination, you may also see a quieter side as a kangaroo grazes, grooms its fur, or sits upright with its forearms resting against its chest. Large ears swivel toward sounds, even when the animal appears completely relaxed. Females may carry a joey in the pouch, and a young kangaroo venturing out can add plenty of activity to an otherwise peaceful group. Western grey kangaroos are native to western and southern parts of Australia, where they feed mainly on grasses and other vegetation. Their gray-brown coats can vary in shade, and males are generally much larger than females. Watch one move from a calm feeding posture into a powerful bound and the specialized design of those legs becomes immediately obvious.
