The western black crowned crane is easy to recognize by the golden crown of stiff feathers rising from its head. Watch closely and you may notice the crane gently shaking those feathers as it moves, adding another layer to its already distinctive appearance. Its dark body, white wings, and bright red throat pouch create a sharp contrast, especially when the bird stretches its wings or calls. These cranes often walk through grasslands and wetlands while picking up seeds, insects, frogs, and other small foods. Their long legs allow them to wade through shallow water, but they are equally comfortable foraging on dry ground. Pairs may bow, hop, and spread their wings during courtship displays, sometimes turning a calm enclosure into a burst of movement. Native to western and central Africa, they are closely associated with open wetlands and grasslands. At a zoo, look for the crown, throat pouch, and quick wing movements when the crane starts to display.
