The trumpeter hornbill is a lively bird to watch, especially when it moves through an exhibit in quick hops and short flights. Its black-and-white plumage is accented by a bright red or orange bill, while the casque on top gives its head an unmistakable shape. Look closely when the bird feeds and you may see it toss fruit upward before swallowing it. Trumpeter hornbills also eat insects and other small foods, often searching among branches and foliage rather than staying in one place. Their calls can be surprisingly loud for a bird of this size, so sound may give away their location before you spot them. They are social birds and may travel or forage in groups, creating plenty of movement when several are active at once. Native to forests and woodland areas of sub-Saharan Africa, trumpeter hornbills spend much of their time among trees. A patient look can reveal the quick bill movements, bright facial colors, and busy social interactions that are easy to miss from a passing glance.
