Rhinoceros Hornbill

The rhinoceros hornbill has a bill that looks almost too elaborate to be real, topped by a curved casque that gives its head a striking profile. Spend a few minutes watching and you may see it toss fruit into its mouth, climb along a branch, or make a short flight between perches with slow, powerful wingbeats. The casque is not simply decoration either. It is part of the bird's distinctive structure and helps produce its unmistakable appearance. Its black body contrasts sharply with the white tail and bright yellow and red markings around the face and bill, details that become easier to notice when the bird turns its head. Native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, rhinoceros hornbills spend much of their time high in the canopy, where they feed on fruit and other foods. Listen for their calls too. Their deep, resonant sounds can carry through a large exhibit, sometimes revealing where the bird is before you spot it.
