The red-billed hornbill is easy to spot, but watching one closely reveals plenty of small details. Its bright red bill gives the bird its name, while the long tail and quick, bouncing movements make it look almost comical as it travels around its habitat. These hornbills often spend time on the ground searching for insects, seeds, and fallen fruit, then suddenly hop or fly to a nearby perch. Their bills are useful tools too, helping them pick through vegetation and handle food. Listen for their calls as well, since a pair may keep in contact while moving around the enclosure. Red-billed hornbills are adapted to the dry savannas and woodlands of much of sub-Saharan Africa, where they can be seen foraging among grasses and low vegetation. At a zoo, their ground-feeding habits are worth watching closely because the action can happen right at eye level, turning a quick stop at the aviary into a chance to notice how much personality a small bird can show.
