The okapi can look like a strange mix of familiar animals, but watching one for a few minutes reveals plenty of details to notice. Its chocolate brown coat seems simple at first, until the bright white stripes on its legs come into view. Those markings help break up its outline in the dense forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where okapis naturally live. At an exhibit, an okapi may spend much of its time quietly browsing, using its long, flexible tongue to pull leaves within reach. That tongue can stretch far enough to clean its own eyes and ears, a detail that is easy to miss unless you are watching closely. Okapis are generally solitary and can be surprisingly quiet, so a calm moment at the enclosure may reveal more than a quick glance. Look for the small movements of the ears, the steady browsing, and those unmistakable striped legs moving through the habitat.
