The northern white-cheeked gibbon is built for life high above the forest floor. Watch one move through an exhibit's canopy and its long arms seem to turn each branch into a pathway. With no tail to help balance, the gibbon relies on powerful arms and flexible shoulders to swing between branches, sometimes moving with remarkable speed. Their loud calls are another clue to look for. A pair or family group may call back and forth, with voices carrying well beyond the enclosure. Males and females can look quite different, and young gibbons change color as they grow, adding another detail worth noticing when several generations are together. Between energetic bouts of swinging, they may sit quietly grooming, resting, or reaching for fruit. Keep your eyes on the upper parts of the habitat rather than the ground. A sudden leap or long swing can happen in an instant, followed by a calm return to the branches.
