Maned wolves look like they were designed from several different animals, with long legs, oversized ears, and a reddish coat topped by a dark mane. At a zoo or wildlife destination, their unusual proportions become especially noticeable when one walks across the habitat. Those long legs help maned wolves move through tall grass, where their height lets them see above the vegetation. Watch the ears too. They can swivel toward sounds as the wolf investigates its surroundings, sometimes pausing to sniff before continuing on its way. Despite the name, maned wolves are not true wolves, and they have a diet that includes a surprising amount of fruit and plant material alongside small animals. The tomato-like lobeira fruit is an important part of their diet in the wild. Native to grasslands, savannas, and open woodland of central and eastern South America, they are usually solitary rather than living in packs. Their quiet, deliberate behavior can make a close encounter feel quite different from watching a social canid.
