Hartmann's Mountain Zebra

Hartmann's mountain zebra is built for rugged country, and that becomes easier to appreciate when you watch one move. The body is compact and sturdy, while the hooves are adapted for climbing rocky slopes and navigating steep ground. Its bold black-and-white stripes can make the animal seem almost graphic from a distance, but up close you may notice that the pattern is slightly different on every zebra. Watch the herd for a few minutes and small details start to emerge. Individuals may graze with their heads down, suddenly lift them to check their surroundings, or follow one another along uneven ground with surprising sure-footedness. Unlike plains zebras, Hartmann's mountain zebras are closely associated with dry, mountainous landscapes where water can be scarce. They are also known for drinking regularly when water is available, sometimes traveling considerable distances between grazing areas and water sources. That connection to a harsh environment helps explain why their sturdy build and confident footing are such important parts of the animal you see in the exhibit.
