Greater one-horned rhinoceroses have a wonderfully prehistoric look, especially when you see the folds of skin around their shoulders and legs. Spend a few minutes watching one and the details start to stand out. The single horn sits above a broad, armored-looking upper lip, while the animal uses its flexible mouth to pull at grasses, leaves, and aquatic plants. At a zoo or wildlife destination, a rhino may spend part of its time grazing or wading, then pause to investigate sounds or scents around the habitat. Their size can be striking when one walks close to the viewing area, yet they can move through water and soft ground with surprising ease. In the wild, greater one-horned rhinos are associated with river valleys, grasslands, and wetlands of the Indian subcontinent. Look closely at the skin folds and facial features when the animal is nearby. They are part of what gives this rhino its distinctive, almost armored appearance.
