On a Galápagos giant tortoise, size is only the beginning. Spend a few minutes watching one and the slow pace starts to reveal more than you might expect. A tortoise may be grazing on grasses, reaching for cactus pads, or simply resting in the shade, but these quiet moments are part of a surprisingly active daily routine. Some individuals travel considerable distances between feeding areas and seasonal nesting grounds, while others use muddy wallows to cool themselves during hot weather. Their shells also tell a story: tortoises from wetter highlands tend to have broad, domed shells, while saddle-backed forms can stretch their long necks toward higher vegetation on drier islands. These giants can live for more than a century, so an adult animal may have witnessed decades of change around it. Look closely at the face and feet, too. Their deliberate movements and weathered appearance make even an ordinary stroll across an exhibit worth following.
