The Eurasian black vulture is hard to miss when it spreads nearly three meters of dark, broad wings and rises effortlessly above an exhibit. This is a bird built for soaring, often circling on rising air rather than flapping, so look up and watch how little effort it seems to take to stay aloft. On the ground, its size becomes even more striking. A massive hooked bill and sturdy body reflect its role as a powerful scavenger, capable of opening carcasses that smaller vultures may struggle to handle. The bare skin around its head also becomes noticeable when you get a close view. Despite its formidable appearance, much of its day is spent quietly searching for food or resting between flights. In parts of its range, including Spain and Central Asia, these vultures nest in wooded hills and mountains. Their near-threatened status adds another layer to seeing one in person, especially as conservation efforts continue in areas where populations have recovered.
