Asian elephants often draw attention with their size, but the trunk is where much of the detail happens. Watch one explore and you may see it sniff the air, gather hay, pull leaves from branches, splash water, or pick up surprisingly small objects with the single finger-like tip at the end of its trunk. Their ears are noticeably smaller than those of African savanna elephants, giving the head a different silhouette. Social moments can be subtle. Elephants may touch trunks, stand close together, rumble to one another, or keep a watchful eye on younger members of the herd. Water and mud frequently bring out more activity, from spraying their backs to coating their skin with a protective layer of dirt. Asian elephants naturally live across a variety of forests and grasslands, so feeding involves plenty of reaching, pulling, and manipulating vegetation. Spend a little time watching and the trunk rarely seems to stay idle for long.
