Angolan pythons are striking snakes to watch because their patterned scales can look almost sculpted when seen up close. Spend a few minutes near the habitat and you may notice the snake slowly exploring with its head, flicking its tongue to gather information from the air, or settling into a tight coil. Their thick bodies and intricate brown, cream, and reddish markings help them blend into rocky landscapes and dry grasslands. At a zoo or wildlife destination, feeding time can reveal another side of their behavior. Like other pythons, they subdue prey by constriction rather than venom, using powerful coils to hold it securely. Angolan pythons are native to rocky and semi-arid regions of southern Africa, including Angola and Namibia, where they spend time among boulders and crevices. They are relatively uncommon in collections, so a close view can be an especially good opportunity to notice the unusual texture and geometric patterning of this little-known python.
