A high-desert sanctuary for rescued exotic cats, providing lifelong care for lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals, and bobcats through a focused mission of animal welfare and public education.
Shambala Preserve is a wildlife sanctuary in California's Antelope Valley dedicated to providing permanent care for exotic cats that can no longer live as pets or return to the wild. The preserve's residents have come from roadside zoos, private owners, and animal confiscations, and include lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals, and bobcats. Shambala does not buy, breed, sell, or trade its animals, instead keeping them for the remainder of their lives.
Public access is centered on guided safari programs rather than open zoo-style admission. Visitors walk through the preserve's natural, unpaved terrain with a guide and learn about the individual animals and the issues surrounding captive exotic cats. The preserve also provides educational programs for student groups, while its Adopt A Wild One program offers supporters opportunities to learn more about individual residents. Because the experience is structured around guided visits and the sanctuary's animal-care mission, Shambala particularly suits travelers interested in rescued big cats, animal welfare, and the practical realities of providing lifelong sanctuary care.
