Murchison, TX
A 1,400-acre Texas animal sanctuary providing permanent homes for rescued wild and farm animals, with expansive natural habitats and guided tours focused on the animals' rescue stories and ongoing care.
Black Beauty Ranch is a large animal sanctuary in East Texas providing permanent homes for nearly 650 rescued wild and farm animals representing more than 40 species. Founded in 1979, the ranch gives animals rescued from cruelty, neglect, research facilities, roadside zoos, and the exotic pet trade protected spaces where they can live long-term. Its expansive setting and natural habitats distinguish it from a conventional zoo, with sanctuary care rather than public exhibition as the central purpose.
Residents include tigers, bears, primates, kangaroos, bison, horses, burros, antelope, reptiles, and cattle. Some habitats cover substantial areas, including pastureland where rescued horses can roam with their herds. Public access is available through scheduled guided bus tours and private tours, allowing visitors to see the sanctuary and learn about individual animals and their histories. The experience is particularly suited to travelers interested in animal rescue, sanctuary work, and seeing wildlife in spacious settings rather than encountering a traditional collection of zoo exhibits.
