The yellow stingray stands out quickly against the sandy bottom, but its color is only part of what makes it fun to watch. Its broad, flattened body moves with gentle waves along the fins, sending the ray gliding across the seafloor almost as if it were flying underwater. Look closely and you may notice the eyes raised on top of the head while the mouth and gill openings sit underneath, an arrangement suited to life on the bottom. Yellow stingrays spend much of their time searching the sand for small prey, sometimes stirring up the sediment as they hunt. At an aquarium, that behavior gives visitors something to follow beyond the animal's bright appearance. The long tail trails behind the body and carries a venomous spine, so the stingray's seemingly relaxed movements have a useful reminder of its wild nature. Its combination of color, shape, and quiet bottom-feeding makes it an easy animal to stop and watch.
