Western rockhopper penguins are small, energetic birds that seem perfectly suited to rough, rocky shores. Watch one on land and you'll see it hop from rock to rock rather than simply waddling, using strong feet to navigate steep and uneven ground. The bright yellow crest feathers above the eyes give the bird an unmistakable expression, while the red eyes and orange bill add more color up close. At a zoo or aquarium, the contrast between land and water is especially fun to watch. On the rocks, rockhoppers can look awkward and busy. In the water, their flipper-like wings drive them forward with quick, powerful strokes as they chase fish and squid. Groups can be noisy too, with birds calling, preening, and jostling around their nesting areas. Western rockhopper penguins are associated with remote subantarctic islands and spend much of their lives at sea. Their compact build, strong legs, and waterproof feathers help them handle both rugged shorelines and cold ocean water.
