Western little penguins may be small, but they bring plenty of activity to a coastal habitat. A group can shuffle between the water and shore, preen their feathers, call to one another, and suddenly disappear beneath the surface. Underwater, their flipper-like wings turn them into quick, agile swimmers as they search for small fish and other prey. At a zoo or aquarium, watch for the subtle blue-gray coloring on the back, which contrasts with the pale underside and helps camouflage them at sea. Their compact size becomes especially noticeable when one swims close to the viewing glass. Little penguins are also known for returning to shore after dark, when groups may gather near nesting sites. Western populations are associated with southern Australia and Tasmania, where they use coastal areas, rocky shores, and sheltered nesting spots. A close look at their small feet, dense feathers, and rapid swimming shows how well these tiny penguins are adapted to life along the southern coast.
