The Timor python is a snake that rewards a closer look. Its greenish-brown body is marked with darker patterns, while the lower half becomes noticeably darker and its scales can catch the light with a subtle sheen. Unlike the name suggests, this python is associated with islands around Timor rather than being a straightforward resident of Timor itself. It is also an unusually active python. Instead of spending long periods motionless, a Timor python may move around its habitat, investigate its surroundings, or climb as it explores. Adults can reach roughly 5 to 8 feet long, but their relatively slender build makes them look different from the heavy-bodied pythons many visitors expect. Keep an eye on the head when viewing one. Heat-sensing pits around the mouth help it detect warm-blooded prey, adding another detail to notice while the snake quietly works its way through its surroundings.
