The tiger-tail seahorse gets its name from the dark bands that wrap around its tail, giving this small fish a striped look that stands out among seagrass and reef life. Its curled tail is more than a visual feature. The seahorse uses it to grip seagrass, corals, or other structures while its body stays upright in the current. Watch closely and you may see the dorsal fin fluttering rapidly as the animal hovers almost in place. Feeding is just as subtle. A seahorse can wait patiently for tiny crustaceans to drift nearby, then suck them through its narrow snout with a quick, almost invisible movement. Its eyes can move independently, helping it scan for prey while remaining anchored. Like other seahorses, the male carries developing young in a specialized brood pouch before giving birth to miniature seahorses. In an aquarium, that combination of stillness and sudden movement makes the tiger-tail seahorse especially rewarding to watch.
