The tiger stingray is a striking bottom-dweller, and its patterned body becomes even more interesting when you watch how effortlessly it moves. Instead of swimming with constant strokes, this ray sends waves along its broad pectoral fins, creating a smooth, almost flying motion as it travels over the seafloor. Its spotted or striped pattern helps distinguish it from more familiar stingrays, while the long tail trails behind like a thin whip. Spend a little time looking near the bottom of an aquarium exhibit and you may see the ray pause, settle onto the sand, then shift position as it searches for food. Like other stingrays, it can use sensory organs around its head to detect prey hidden beneath the sediment. The combination of an unusual shape, patterned back, and graceful movement makes this a ray worth watching closely rather than simply passing by the glass.
