The tiger sorubim is a striking freshwater catfish that becomes more interesting the longer you watch it. Its elongated body carries dark tiger-like markings, while the broad, flattened head and long barbels give it the unmistakable look of a river-bottom hunter. In an aquarium, check around rocks, logs, and shaded areas where it may rest quietly before making a sudden move. Those barbels are especially useful to notice. They help the fish sense its surroundings and locate food, even when the water is murky or light is limited. Tiger sorubim are active predators that feed on fish and other aquatic animals, often relying on a quick strike rather than a long chase. Their streamlined body also allows them to move surprisingly fast when they decide to pursue something. Watch for the contrast between long periods of stillness and sudden bursts of movement. A fish that seems to be simply hovering may actually be positioned carefully, waiting for an opportunity. That combination of patience, speed, and a bold striped pattern makes the tiger sorubim a rewarding fish to seek out in a large freshwater exhibit.
