The tiger rockfish is a striking bottom-dwelling fish that can be easy to miss until you notice its bold pattern. Dark bars and reddish or brown tones help it blend among the rocks, kelp, and shadows of the North Pacific coast. In an aquarium, look around rocky ledges and structure rather than expecting constant open-water swimming. A tiger rockfish may hover quietly in one spot, using its fins to make small adjustments before moving to another sheltered area. That calm behavior is useful in a habitat where conserving energy and staying close to cover can be important. Look closely at the head and fins, too. Like other rockfish, it has a sturdy body and spiny dorsal fin that give it a rugged appearance. Rockfish can also live for many years, making them very different from the short-lived fish many visitors may picture when they think of aquarium species. When one shifts out from a rocky crevice, its striped body becomes much easier to see, revealing how well its colors suit the dim, textured world of the Pacific seafloor.
