The Tasmanian devil may look small compared with many of the animals around it, but spend a few minutes watching and its personality quickly comes through. These stocky marsupials can be surprisingly energetic, sniffing around their enclosure, investigating new smells, and using their powerful jaws to crunch through food. That jaw strength is one reason devils can make short work of bones and tough scraps that other animals leave behind. Listen closely during feeding time and you might hear the growls, screeches, or sharp vocalizations that helped give the animal its famous name. Tasmanian devils are mostly nocturnal in the wild, so daytime visitors may catch them resting before suddenly becoming active. Their compact build and dark coat can make them easy to overlook at first. Then one starts moving, and the strong claws, broad head, and lively behavior become much harder to miss.
