Sumatran Tiger

Native Range
Sumatra, Indonesia

The Sumatran tiger is the smallest surviving tiger subspecies, but its compact build still looks remarkably powerful when it moves. Watch closely and you may see it patrol the edges of its space, pause to investigate a scent, or suddenly turn toward a sound that nobody else noticed. Its darker, closely spaced stripes give the coat a distinctive look, especially when the tiger passes through dappled shade. Water can add another surprise. Sumatran tigers are capable swimmers, so a pool may reveal playful splashing or a slow, deliberate wade that visitors do not always expect from a big cat. Up close, the details are just as striking: broad paws, long whiskers and rounded ears that constantly shift as the tiger takes in its surroundings. Native to the forests of Sumatra, this rare tiger also gives visitors a glimpse of a species facing serious pressure in the wild.
