Steller sea lions are hard to ignore when one moves through the water. They are the largest sea lions, and their size becomes especially clear when one swims close to an aquarium viewing window or climbs onto a haul-out platform. Watch the front flippers underwater as they provide powerful strokes, while the flexible body helps the sea lion turn and change direction. On land, they can use their flippers to move with surprising purpose, although their size makes every step look substantial. Listen for the deep, resonant calls when several animals are together. Young Steller sea lions may also spend time practicing swimming and maneuvering, making their movements fun to follow. Native to the cold waters of the North Pacific, they are comfortable in both coastal seas and rocky shore environments. Their thick necks, broad heads, and pale tan to reddish coats give them a noticeably different appearance from smaller sea lions.
