Rockhopper penguins are easy to spot when they start hopping across rocky ground instead of taking the usual waddling route. Their yellow eyebrow-like crest feathers and bright red eyes give them a distinctive look, especially when one turns toward the viewing area. At a zoo or aquarium, watch how confidently these small penguins navigate uneven rocks, using their strong feet to hop between ledges and crevices. In the water, they are just as energetic. Their flipper-like wings propel them through the sea as they chase fish, squid, and other prey, and they can leap through the surface in quick bursts. Groups can be noisy, with birds calling, preening, and jostling around their habitat. Rockhopper penguins breed on rocky coastal islands, often in large colonies where steep terrain makes climbing and hopping essential. Their compact bodies are well suited to the rough landscape, while their waterproof feathers keep them insulated during long periods at sea.
