Polar bears can look almost leisurely on land, but watch one enter the water and the picture changes. Powerful front paws become paddles, pushing the bear forward while its hind legs trail behind like rudders. On shore, a polar bear may investigate scents, dig, climb, play with objects, or stretch out for a long rest. Their creamy white fur gets plenty of attention, although the hairs themselves are actually transparent and cover black skin underneath. Look at the paws too. They are enormous, with rough pads and fur that help provide grip and insulation on Arctic ice. Polar bears rely heavily on their sense of smell and can spend considerable time sniffing their surroundings. In the wild, much of their life is tied to sea ice, where they hunt seals and travel across vast distances. Seeing one move between land and water makes it easier to understand just how well this massive bear is built for both.
