The platypus is the sort of animal that rewards a second look because almost every part of it seems to break the usual rules. Its broad, duck-like bill is sensitive to electrical signals from prey, while webbed feet help it move through freshwater. Watch one underwater and notice how the front feet do most of the paddling while the hind feet and tail help with steering. When it dives, the eyes and ears close, leaving the bill to do much of the searching. Platypuses spend much of their time foraging along river and stream bottoms, turning over gravel and probing the mud for insects, worms, crustaceans, and other small prey. Males also have a venomous spur on the hind leg, an unusual feature that is easy to overlook when the animal is resting. Because platypuses are most active around dawn, dusk, and during the night, aquarium visitors may see bursts of energetic swimming followed by periods of quiet exploration. Watching one weave through the water makes it clear why this Australian mammal has such a distinctive way of life.
