The ocelot is a small wild cat that rewards a closer look. Its golden coat is covered with dark rosettes, spots, and stripes, creating a pattern that can seem to change as the cat moves through vegetation. In a zoo habitat, watch for the way it uses every part of its surroundings. An ocelot may climb onto a branch, pause on a rock, or slip quietly through dense plants before stopping to survey the area. These cats are largely nocturnal, so daytime visitors may catch them resting in a shaded spot, but a sudden ear twitch or change in posture can signal that something has caught their attention. Their short legs and long tail give them a low, balanced profile that suits life in forested habitats. Ocelots are also capable swimmers, and wild individuals may cross streams or hunt along the edges of water. When one gets up and starts moving, the combination of stealth, sharp turns, and careful foot placement makes it easy to see how well this spotted cat is suited to hunting in thick cover.
