Nubian lions are associated with the historic lion populations of North Africa and are often recognized by the heavy, dark manes that some males develop. A resting male can look almost hidden inside all that hair, but once he stands, the contrast between the mane and his muscular shoulders becomes much clearer. Social behavior is worth watching too. Lions may rub heads in greeting, groom one another, or settle together in close groups, while younger animals turn almost anything into an excuse to stalk or wrestle. Much of the day can be quiet because lions naturally conserve energy between periods of activity. When that changes, it happens quickly. A lion may begin patrolling, investigate a scent, or suddenly respond to another animal with a deep call. The roar is not just for show. In the wild, lions use powerful vocalizations to advertise their presence and communicate across long distances, especially when group members are separated.
