Native Range
Central and eastern Himalayas

Nepalese red pandas are easy to miss at first, especially when one is curled up on a high branch. Give the habitat a little time and you may catch the animal waking, stretching, or carefully climbing through the trees with its long tail trailing behind. Their reddish coat stands out against leafy branches, while the pale markings around the face make every expression look distinctive. Red pandas spend much of their lives in trees, and their flexible ankles help them climb down trunks headfirst, a detail that is especially fun to watch when it happens close to the viewing area. Feeding time can bring out another side of their personality as they grasp bamboo and other foods with their paws, often sitting upright while they eat. Native to the forests of the eastern Himalayas, they are adapted to cool, densely vegetated mountain habitats. A quiet red panda may not demand attention like a large animal, but spotting one moving through the branches can reward anyone willing to pause and look closely.
