Mongoose lemurs are lively little lemurs with a habit of keeping their eyes and ears on everything around them. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch for quick climbs through branches, careful sniffs, or a sudden dash toward food. Their pointed faces and expressive eyes make those small movements easy to follow, while their long tails help with balance as they move through the canopy. Mongoose lemurs are especially interesting during feeding because their diet changes with the seasons. They eat fruit, flowers, nectar, and leaves, and may spend time reaching between branches to find the ripest option. In the wild, they live in the dry forests of northwestern Madagascar and often move through trees in small groups. Their social interactions can include grooming, quiet contact, and coordinated movement between feeding spots. A close look also reveals subtle differences between individuals, including variations in facial coloring. They may not have the dramatic size of larger zoo animals, but their quick movements and constant curiosity make them easy to keep watching once you spot them.
