The Mexican tiger ratsnake is a slender, boldly patterned snake that rewards visitors who take time to examine its markings. Its body can carry vivid bands or blotches that help it stand out in a reptile exhibit, while the long, muscular shape allows it to move smoothly through branches, rocks, and ground cover. Watch the head as it explores. The tongue flicks in and out to collect chemical information from the air, helping the snake investigate what is nearby. Depending on the individual and habitat, it may climb, coil around a branch, or remain tucked into cover for long periods. Ratsnakes are nonvenomous constrictors, and their flexible jaws allow them to swallow prey whole. Small changes in posture can reveal when the snake has noticed something interesting, even if the rest of its body remains still. Its name hints at one part of its natural history too: these snakes can feed on rodents as well as other small animals.
