Matschie's tree-kangaroos look like kangaroos from a different world. Their compact bodies, short faces, and long tails are built for life in the trees rather than open grassland. At a zoo or wildlife destination, watch how carefully one moves along branches, using strong forelimbs and gripping feet to climb. Tree-kangaroos can descend tree trunks headfirst, an unusual skill that is especially fun to see when the animal is close to the viewing area. They also spend time on the ground, where their powerful hind legs allow them to hop, but their movements are usually more deliberate than those of familiar ground-dwelling kangaroos. Matschie's tree-kangaroos are native to the mountain forests of New Guinea, where dense vegetation and steep terrain shape their way of life. Their long tails help with balance as they navigate branches, while their thick fur suits the cooler highland environment.
