The Javan rhinoceros hornbill is a striking bird to watch because its enormous bill and casque make even simple movements look distinctive. Spend a few minutes near its habitat and you may notice the bird carefully working its way through branches, tossing food back into its mouth, or calling with its large bill pointed upward. The casque, a helmet-like structure above the bill, adds to its unusual profile but is surprisingly lightweight compared with its size. Its strong bill is useful for handling fruit and other foods found in the forest canopy. In a zoo or wildlife destination, look for moments when the hornbill hops between perches or stretches its wings. The broad wings and contrasting black-and-white plumage become especially noticeable when it flies across the enclosure. Native to the forests of Java, this hornbill is closely tied to tall trees and life high above the forest floor. Its distinctive shape makes it easy to recognize, even from across a busy aviary.
