The harpy eagle is a bird that makes its size easier to appreciate when you see it perched just a few meters away. Its broad wings, tall crest, and enormous talons give it a powerful silhouette, while the pale facial markings stand out against its dark feathers. Watch the feet closely if the eagle shifts position. The claws are exceptionally large and strong, built for grabbing prey in the forest canopy. Harpy eagles spend much of their time perched and scanning rather than constantly flying, so an apparently quiet bird may actually be watching everything around it. In the wild, they hunt in tropical forests and can take tree-dwelling animals such as sloths and monkeys. Their short, broad wings are another useful detail to notice. They are suited to maneuvering between trees rather than soaring over open landscapes. A close encounter also reveals how different this eagle looks from the familiar soaring raptors often seen in open-country habitats. When the crest rises, the bird's expression changes dramatically, making even a resting harpy eagle worth watching for a little longer.
