Hamadryas baboons are rarely short on activity. A troop may spread across the habitat, with some animals grooming, others searching for food, and younger baboons chasing one another through the enclosure. Adult males are especially striking, with long silver-white hair around the shoulders that gives them a mane-like appearance. Females and younger animals have darker brown coats, making the differences between members of the group easy to spot. Watch the social interactions closely. Grooming is not just about keeping clean, it also helps reinforce relationships within the troop. Young baboons may stay close to adults before suddenly breaking away to investigate something nearby. Hamadryas baboons naturally live in dry regions of northeast Africa and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, often moving between rocky terrain and open areas. Their complex social lives are what make them especially rewarding to watch at a zoo. A few minutes at the exhibit can reveal a whole network of grooming, following, calling, and playful behavior happening at once.
