The Fiji short-crested iguana is a quiet animal that rewards visitors who slow down and look closely. Its green coloring can blend remarkably well with leaves and branches, so at first it may seem almost motionless. Then you may notice a deliberate head turn, a slow climb, or a sudden shift from one branch to another. Look for the short crest along its back, a feature that helps distinguish it from some of the other large iguanas found in collections. This species is native to Fiji's forested islands, where its strong claws and grasping feet help it navigate trees and dense vegetation. At a zoo or wildlife exhibit, watching one browse among branches can give you a glimpse of how well its body is suited to life above the forest floor. Patience often pays off. A seemingly sleepy iguana can become much more active when it decides to move, climb, or investigate what is happening nearby.
