Eastern black rhinoceroses have a presence that is hard to miss, even when they are simply standing and browsing. Watch the long, pointed upper lip at work as the rhino reaches between branches and pulls leaves from shrubs. That prehensile lip is one of its most distinctive features and helps explain why black rhinos often browse woody plants rather than grazing close to the ground. Their two horns are another obvious feature, but the details become more interesting when you watch closely. Small ears swivel toward sounds, the thick skin folds around the shoulders, and a rhino may pause suddenly to investigate something nearby. At a zoo or wildlife destination, these quiet moments can be just as interesting as movement. Eastern black rhinos are native to parts of eastern Africa and are adapted to a mix of savanna, woodland, and scrub habitats. A few minutes of observation often reveal an animal that is far more attentive and deliberate than its heavy build suggests.
