Native Range
West and Central African forests, woodlands and savannas

Common chimpanzees are rarely short on things to watch. Spend a few minutes near their habitat and you may see one inspecting an object with its hands, climbing with surprising speed, grooming a companion, or suddenly joining a burst of play. Their faces are remarkably expressive, and small changes in posture or vocalizations can reveal a lot about what is happening within the group. Young chimpanzees often provide the most movement, wrestling, chasing and practicing skills they will need as adults. Older individuals may sit quietly while keeping a close eye on the activity around them. Chimpanzees also use tools in the wild, including sticks to reach food, so enrichment objects at a zoo can sometimes lead to especially purposeful behavior. Watching those moments closely shows how much thought can go into what first looks like simple play or exploration.
