The Catalina Island rattlesnake is a striking example of how an animal can become closely adapted to life on an island. Its patterned body helps it blend into rocky, dry surroundings, so look closely for the shape of the snake among rocks, soil, and vegetation. Like other rattlesnakes, it uses heat-sensing pits near the eyes to help detect warm-bodied prey, while its forked tongue gathers scent information from the air. Much of the time it may remain still, conserving energy while waiting for an opportunity to feed. The tail rattle can be heard when the snake feels threatened, but it is not constantly rattling. Native only to Santa Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California, this rattlesnake is adapted to the island's rugged landscape. At a zoo or wildlife exhibit, a close view makes details such as the keeled scales, triangular head, and patterned body easier to appreciate than they might be in the wild.
