The Bornean rhinoceros hornbill is a bird that seems almost oversized in every direction. Its huge bill is topped by a curved casque, giving the head a distinctive shape that is easy to spot even through dense foliage. Watch closely and you may notice the bill being used for much more than feeding. These hornbills pluck and carry fruit with impressive precision, then toss food back toward the throat. Their loud wingbeats can also be surprisingly dramatic when a bird moves between perches. Pairs often stay close, and their deep calls can carry through the forest. One of the strangest details is the nesting behavior. The female seals herself inside a tree cavity, leaving only a narrow opening through which the male passes food while she incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks. At a zoo or wildlife park, that enormous bill, bright facial markings, and powerful movements give visitors plenty of small details to discover while watching the bird feed or perch.
